Google Glass App Allows Wearer to “See Emotions” on Others’ Faces

Fraunhofer Google Glass

Google Glass, released to the public in May in its “Explorer” incarnation for US $1500, has been the subject of quite a lot of criticism and fear-mongering already, for its potential applications. These criticisms are set to amplify even further shortly, with the impact of Google Glass apps, otherwise known as “glassware”, which will be developed by third party developers to truly unlock the potential of such a device. Hey there, We appreciate and respect your freedom to block ads on the web, but could we kindly ask you add an exception for WordMean? Not only is the website non-intrusive…

Four Officers to Be Charged Over Roberto Laudisio Death for Excessive Force in Australia

Four New South Wales police officers will face assault charges over the death of young Brazilian student Roberto Laudisio Curti last year after he was tasered up to 14 times, sprayed with capsicum spray and held on the ground by police using their knees against his throat in March of 2012. Mr Curti had supposedly stolen a packet of biscuits from a convenience store and was said to be ‘delusional’ and ‘behaving erratically’. Toxicology reports showed a small amount of LSD in his system. After Mr Curti’s death, the family necessitated "accountability" for his "awful death" and greeted the news…

CCTV Cameras to Be Placed Between Your Legs on Sydney Trains?

Could arguably voyeuristic security cameras be placed between train carriages and platforms? A pre-release of an upcoming security upgrades brief from the New South Wales transport service has gotten safety and privacy tangled up once again with a strange sentence suggesting that CCTV cameras could be installed underneath train carriages – ultimately proposing an ‘upskirt’ camera issue – raises several questions. The document – available at our Disclosure Vault – claims that “Under-carriage (step) cameras are to be planned pending the addressing of privacy concerns.” In July of this year Sydney Trains replaced CityRail as the provider of metropolitan train…

Steve Jobs, Apple and the NSA: Friends Working Together as Revealed by Leaked Slides

We’ve done this several times before. Steve Jobs was over-rated, True tech innovators weren’t given enough appraisal after their deaths and so forth. I think it’s very safe to say that and I as editor are no fans of Apple, Steve Jobs and the Apple fans who insist that Jobs was a revolutionary entrepreneur. (and of course let us humbly remind you that Apple threatened us with legal action for using a photo of Jobs). New slides leaked by Edward Snowden and released with commentary by Der Spiegel have indicated that Apple, Inc. was in-fact one of the driving…

Terminally Violent? Global Gun Control and the United States

Gun homicide rates

American culture can seem strange to those outside the borders of the New World looking in. For many visitors to the States, that strangeness is often epitomized by the size of everything. Food portion sizes, drink sizes, road sizes, car sizes, store sizes, church sizes and, the cliché suggests, people sizes- for the unfamiliar, ‘supersize’ can seem as much a national motto as it is a meal option. That physical trend also tends to seem mirrored by a less tangible bigness- a general sense of the overblown- which certainly seems to apply regarding gun politics. America has long prided itself…

Massacres: Are Guns the Problem, or Are People?

The mass media contribute to the logic that the government is always the rival, and so they quash the foundations of actual power in society. We’ve seen the USA’s response to potential gun ownership law reforms hammered by the NRA who not only holds a large percentage of funds that businesses and the government rely on but the claims that it’s not those who own guns that are the problem, it’s those who don’t. Individuals have all kinds of enthusiasms for opposing gun control but underneath it all there is a serious power that makes what could be simple harder….

Grand Theft Auto Is AGAIN Blamed for Massacre.

We wanted to cover this story…but then we realised we have already done so time and time again – so in a way, this is a friendly ‘bump’ for our lengthy feature regarding video games and the blame they take for violent psychopaths. Meet Jack Thompson : An Annoyingly Conservative Activist Jack Thompson has always been infamous for his constant blame-the-game antics in which he would represent alleged murderers that were under the age of 18 with the excuse that “they did it because they saw the digital person do it”. Jack is what the violence in games activism world…
