Scotland’s Independence Result: No Means Yes…Possibly

Although fifty five percent of the electorate voted in favour of Scotland remaining as part of the UK, it seems that it isn’t the end of the story, not by a long shot. The referendum has ultimately ended up posing more questions than it ever hoped to solve. It’s not necessarily the end Hey there, We appreciate and respect your freedom to block ads on the web, but could we kindly ask you add an exception for WordMean? Russia Implements Full Ban on Imports From US, Au, Canada, EU and Norway.

Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree on the full ban for imports of beef, pork, poultry meat, fish, cheese, milk, vegetables and fruit from Australia, Canada, the EU, the US and Norway. The ban will be in effect until August 7, 2015. Responding to the sanctions, somewhat hypocritically, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says it is disappointing Russia has retaliated over Australian sanctions imposed over the crisis in Ukraine. The bans could cost Australian producers hundreds of millions of dollars. According to Department of Foreign Affairs figures, exports to Russia in 2013 were worth: Beef: $150m Butter: $64m…

Crimea’s parliament has voted to join Russia in a dramatic escalation of the crisis over the Ukrainian region that has drawn serious condemnation from the US, UK and other Western countries with their interests. The US has now ordered sanctions on those responsible for Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine, including bans on travel to the United States and freezing of their U.S. assets. Here’s what we know has happened so far in the Ukraine-Russia-US debacle: Crimea’s parliament has voted to join Russia in a dramatic escalation of the crisis over the Ukrainian region that has drawn serious condemnation from the…

Russia May Ban iPhone in Favour of “More Secure” Android Device

Fresh from the evidence pool that Apple was in bed with the NSA, Russian lawmakers are concerned about the use of foreign phones such as the Apple iPhone due to the fact the communications made abroad may not be secure enough. Lawmakers have spoken against using Apple’s latest device, the iPhone 5s, stating that the device’s fingerprint-recognition security measure could be storing the prints in US intelligence agency databases; a paranoid idea that isn’t entirely unfeasible after over a year of developments and leaks regarding international spying. The twin-screened Yotaphone, which features a full-colour LCD screen on one side and…

Male, Female, Other: Germany Implements Third Gender Into Law

Germany has become Europe’s first country to implement a third gender by allowing babies born with characteristics of both sexes to be registered as neither male nor female. The new law will give parents the option of leaving gender section blank on birth certificate, creating a category in public register for “indeterminate sex.” Whilst physical attributes to identify a human’s gender are the penis or vagina – there has in fact been scientific cases where some are born with both. The change is seen as the country’s first legal acknowledgment that it is – under their law – possible to…

Surveillance by US Stretches to Spain as Lawmakers Urge Europe to Be Grateful for the Lives Saved by the NSA

Spain has joined France and Germany in demanding answers from the US over its spying programmes after "El Mundo" newspaper revealed that the United States had monitored more than 60 million Spanish telephone calls in the space of a single month, slamming the surveillance as "inappropriate and unacceptable". This is but a flake of snow in the recent blizzard of scandal over US snooping on telephone and online communications of ordinary citizens and world leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The newspaper has said such systematic trawling of huge volumes of digital information includes intercepting personal details through Internet web…

An update on this story: Lamb of God Vocalist Indicted on Manslaughter Charges after Fan Falls from Stage. A Czech court has acquitted the lead vocalist, Randy Blythe, of Lamb of God on charges that he caused the death of a fan. The hearing had accused Blythe, 42, of causing the death of the 19-year old fan by pushing him off the stage at a 2010 concert. The Czech media purportedly portrayed Randy Blythe as the member of a ‘dark’ band and suggested that his defence – pushing a fan back who leaped at him towards the stage – was…

The UK & the European Union: David Cameron to Launch Referendum Over Their Relationship.

European leaders have responded negatively to UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s declaration that he will try to “renegotiate” the UK’s relationship with Europe and give the British the ability to vote for or against staying in the European Union. Cameron ended months of speculation by saying in a speech that “public disillusionment” with the EU is currently at “an all-time high”. There’s no doubt about it: Europe can quite easily survive without the UK but will either parties benefit from the split? The concerns over British-European relations has seen Cameron cop much criticism for supposedly “trying to gain points” for…
