Australian Coalition Suggesting More Poorly-Researched Ideas for Better Internet Access: Why HFC Is a Bad Idea.

Capture.png

Australia’s abysmal internet access and terrible speeds and coverage have been the focus of political debate for several years now, and it’s not at all surprising that the suggestions that have come up recently by the Liberal government (who have been in for about 3 months and haven’t exactly kept their promises on many pre-election claims) are unrealistic and flawed. The NBN (National Broadband Network) has been a problematic introduction from day one. The issue is now the suggestion by the Coalition (Liberal government) to use Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) for a good third of all premises. This is the…

Murdoch Block! Get Rid of News Corp From Your Browsing Life

Murdoch Block

Are you sick of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp and the incredibly biased reporting it lets loose upon the gullible folks of the world? Not sure where to start? Perhaps this Chrome Extension is for you. Murdoch Block, currently rated 4.73 stars out of five on the Chrome Web Store, provides a humorous “blocking” when your browser navigates to a website owned, operated, or controlled by the evil empire of sensationalisation and bias, News Corp. Perhaps this paragraph, is, ironically also biased – against News Corp – but forgive me for being a little annoyed at Murdoch’s heavy-handed puppeteering of the…

[SPECIAL SERIES] [The Deep Web] the Internet’s Hidden Child Pornography Ring.

WordswithMeaning.org Darkweb images 7 May 2013 (1)

See: [SPECIAL SERIES] [The Deep Web] an Introduction to the Deepest, Darkest Parts of the Internet. [SPECIAL SERIES] [The Deep Web] Human Experiments and Groups Dedicated to Subject Research. First let me explain my criticisms for the way Child Pornography (CP) is dealt with by the worlds’ top governments. For starters; CP is not illegal within the entire world. It may come as a surprise but accessing, owning or distributing the content is still a legitimate trade in some parts of Asia and so therefore if something is hosted within a country that has no strict policy against it –…

Facebook News Feeds: Pornography, Gore, Obscenity and Disturbing Footage.

facebook-gore.jpg

Facebook users: have you noticed a rising trend of strange, gory, sexual or generally disgusting videos trending on the social networking site? You’re not alone in thinking it’s bizarre to see it on a site like Facebook. Whether you wish to or not – Facebook has attracted criticism for showing the footage whenever someone on your friends list views it or comments (for whatever reason). My personal Facebook news feed often shows “_____ commented on video” and more than half the time, it’s actually a friend commenting “This is just fucked” or “Use other websites to raise awareness” In its…

US Military Programming Software to Spread Pro-American Propaganda via Non-English Websites; Claims It Would Be Dishonest to "Address US Audiences" With Such Technology.

Sockpuppet-wordmean.jpg

New discoveries reveal that the US military is programming software that will clandestinely influence social media sites by using bogus online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda. Sounds a little radical and far-fetched doesn’t it? Keep reading. A Californian business known as Ntrepid has been bestowed a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to advance what is described as "online persona management service" that will allow one user to control the identity of 10 individuals on the net – 10 non-existent individuals that is. False…

BT, Sky, Virgin, O2 Amongst ISP’s Blocking Torrent Sites

H33T.png

So far a High Court verdict has enforced mandatory censorship for major internet service providers BT, Sky, Virgin Media, O2, EE and TalkTalk. The sites in question that have been blocked are The Pirate Bay, KickAss Torrents (KAT), Fenopy and H33T.   Earlier this month, Torrentfreak reported that the fantasy action series “Game of Thrones” was the most pirated television program. This triggered a rather welcoming response from HBO’s programming president Michael Lombardo who considered the statistics as a compliment, especially as Game of Thrones was the network’s best-selling DVD season release of 2012.   “The demand is there. And…

Pastebin Removing Hacktivist Uploads.

Pastebin-begins-censorship.png

Pastebin – the website often adored by hackers and online activists for simply publishing text files acquired from hacking and so forth – has begun censoring, moderating and ultimately removing posts published by the likes of Anonymous and other online hacktivists. Whilst Pastebin was always popular amongst groups like Anonymous – there are plenty of other ways to dump the information with Pastebay in mind – a site setup by Pirate Bay founders with the soul intention to resist all censorship. Distributing information isn’t exactly hard to do in this day and age and people will always reach the content…

WordswithMeaning.org Returns After Shutdown. All Hail Zombified News Website!

Delete-Layer.png

Well, it certainly is a little ironic that after our insistence that people avoid Western censorship by hosting their websites in more open-minded political areas, we get taken down on the technicality that the embassy in which WordswithMeaning.org was being hosted temporarily was in fact using a partner of BT (British Telecom), the company who so infamously has been blocking access to websites such as The Pirate Bay and for some reason, WordMean. We aren’t entirely sure of the details at this moment but according to the legal correspondence letters; we were openly linking to content deemed illegal to possess…

Business Watchdog: Do SkyDrive’s Terms Give Microsoft the Power to Crack Password Protected Archives?

SkyDrive.jpg

Returning to the idea of using Windows 8 and the Surface tablet and automatically being a user of Microsoft’s cloud service “SkyDrive”, we received an interesting set of complaints from a reader wishing to express his distrust in Microsoft’s moderating team for disabling his ENTIRE account for saving part of his hard drive image on his SkyDrive account – which he claims included a password protected zip archive that contained a few “artistic photography shoots” involving a semi-naked lady (reader claims to be a professional photographer). Rather than disabling his private file storage abilities, he claims to have lost access…

Aaron-Swartz-at-a-PIPA-protest.jpg

Aaron Swartz, the co-developer of the specification of  RSS – in which he was involved in at just age 14 – has committed suicide. He also developed Reddit. The 26-year-old has hanged himself in his apartment. He was facing multiple years in prison due to his online activism. If convicted, he could have faced a 4 million dollar fine as well as nearly 50 years in prison. Swartz was plagued by legal problems due to his  Internet activism, co-founding Demand Progress – a political action group promoting freedom on the internet.
