Mr. John Shipton, photo courtesy of WordswithMeaning.orgIn a huge turn of events WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been presented with an Aboriginal Nations passport. (His father, John Shipton, accepted the passport on his behalf)

The action was said to be a response to “Australia’s abandonment” of Mr. Assange.

We spoke to John Shipton today via email where he claimed his son had been deserted by the Australian government, and the passport ceremony – which follows Ecuador’s decision to grant consular asylum – was a show of commonality.

“Australian governments of every colour are happy to abandon their citizens when they’re in difficult situations overseas,” he stated

The group that organized the ceremony is known as the Indigenous Social Justice Association and they claim that they want recognition of Aboriginal sovereignty.

ISJA president Ray Jackson said more than 200 people were present at the event.

“Julian was treated badly by this government, who are quite happy to sit back and take orders from the US,” Mr. Jackson said.

The passport will be carefully delivered to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London within the next few days.
